FORT WASHINGTON, Md. — After authoring a track record performance earlier in the meet, Nobody Knows It punctuated her season with a victory in the $100,000 Maryland Sire Stakes final for 2-year-old trotting fillies at Rosecroft Raceway on Sunday night (Oct. 11).
Richard Hans’ homebred trainee took command early in the mile and never looked back while posting fractions of :28.3, :58, 1:27 and 1:56.2 over the wet-fast track. Nobody Knows It was on top by a commanding 5 lengths past three-quarters, but stablemate That’s It For You tried to make a race of it late, coming up just a length short at the finish.
“She’s a gamer, she wants to go forward, and she wants to beat other horses,” said driver Corey Callahan. “She gets bored on the front end all the time, but I knew I was going to win. I didn’t pop the plugs or call on her; she just coasted in. I could’ve gone to plan B if I had to.”
The Betting Gangster S-Goo Luck Charm filly has won her last seven starts against Maryland-restricted company, including a Sire Stakes final this summer at Ocean Downs. Her record stands at a perfect 8-for-8. She has partnered with Callahan in all of her races so far, and together they’ve now banked over $150,000. As the heavy favorite, Nobody Knows It returned $2.10 to win.
Callahan knew immediately how talented of a horse he was dealing with and hopes that she gets her chance on bigger stages next year.
“After her first start, I knew right then and there that no one in Maryland could beat her,” Callahan said. “She’s just a really nice horse. Richard (Hans) is an excellent horseman that breeds some great horses; I hope she gets a chance in some stakes next year. I think she deserves an opportunity.”
Hans also had a pair of his protégés finish in the top two spots in the Sire Stakes final for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings.
Booger Bear and Y’all Got No Shot drew away from the competition and were nearly 15 lengths clear of the others at the finish. Booger Bear ($3.40) ultimately prevailed over his stablemate, a near carbon copy of the finish at the Ocean Downs Maryland Sire Stakes final a month ago.
In other Maryland Sire Stakes action:
- And Just Like That ($2.20) gave favorite-backers a serious scare when she was 8 lengths off the gate at the start of the final for 3-year-old trotting fillies. However, she recovered and circled the field to hit the front by the half and trotted away from her rivals late to win by an incredible 13-3/4-length margin in 1:55.4. The Megan Foster trainee has been plagued with breaking issues in the past but has shown tremendous talent when she stays flat. She is owned and was driven by Russell Foster.
- If I Win Uwin ($4.80) saved all the ground around the final turn and exploded through the passing lane in the stretch to win the final for 2-year-old pacing fillies in 1:57.1. Jonathan Roberts was the beneficiary of a late pickup drive for trainer Les Givens and owners J M B Ventures.
- More Than Better ($7.40) led all the way to post a 7-length score in the final for 3-year-old pacing fillies in 1:54.1. Driver Russell Foster picked up his second Sire Stakes final win of the night for trainer Herman Hagerman and owner Hagerman Racing.
- In The Worst Way ($2.80) made a powerful brush for driver Corey Braden after the half to take over and drew clear to win the final for 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings by 9-1/4 lengths in 2:00.4. Trainer Herman Hagerman and owner Hagerman Racing picked up their second Sire Stakes wins on the card.
- Shootout ($2.60) led all the way to earn his eighth win of the season in the final for 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings in 1:53.1, shaving nearly three seconds off his previous lifetime mark. Roger Plante Jr. drove for winning trainer Steve LeBlanc and co-owners Glenn Dyke, LeBlanc Racing Inc. and James Stuart.
- Better Gon ($2.20) recovered from an early break approaching the quarter and survived an inquiry to draw clear late to win after sustaining a strong first-over brush in the final for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings in 1:54.3. The victory completed a stakes hat trick for Russell Foster. The gelding is owned by Frederick Weitz Jr. and trained by Adrian Wisher Jr.
Live harness racing returns to Rosecroft on Thursday (Oct. 15); the card features a $5,042.06 carryover in the 50-cent Jackpot Hi-5, offered in the finale. First post is 7:15 p.m. (EDT).
